OH I forgot to say some people had v brilliantly suggested that. Oddly enough my sister had always said she wanted a dog called Mr Collins, but agree re the park!

I have been quietly naming my dogs after British Earldoms (pretentious, moi?) and nobody, not even my husband, has noticed (bet my mother would have). We have had Percy and now have Herbert and Dudley. See also Howard, Cecil etc. Dust off that Debretts!

I love Percy most of all. And my friend Clare would VERY much approve of this!

I was pretty pleased with Percy myself … I’ve met a few other Percys and heard of one Herbert but never a Dudley. Percy the Parsons sounds good to me! Though also for terriers I feel other surnames could work - Perkins springs to mind but that's mostly just alliteration.

I am sitting in Norfolk looking and the interminable rain and my walnut tree. I mean, WALNUT - surely a contender. Trees in general would be a very good source, but maybe not Sycamore

He is so very cute. We’ve always had lady dogs but I’d have called a boy, Oscar. Or Timmy from Famous Five. I bet inspiration will just strike and you’ll just know the perfect name.

Colin Tennant? Linley? Hugh Grosvenor?

I really love Colin BUT think everyone would think of the TV show Colin From Accounts. Which I loved. But it feels alike a copycat move?!

funnily enough, I wasn’t even thinking of that, just a Scottish colleague I used to wind up by saying his name was the perfect English dog name

You will agonise over the name and then find you hardly use it. Our Staffie (Joanie) is more often Gurli, Gurla, Darling, Ladybug, Suzie Blue/Suzie, Baby Lady, Staffie, etc (cringe). All these nicknames evolved organically and we barely ever use her name lol.

I was going to say the same thing!! So true. Also some nicknames will have no link whatsoever to their actual name and you’ll have no idea how it came to be 😆

Haha literally, I can’t remember the last time I used her name 😆

Oh, goodness - I have the same predicament! Except it is a roly poly Corgi puppy coming to my house. A boy joining a labrador retriever friend. What to name him...that my family can agree on...I'm open to any great suggestions!

You may have peaked with Trumpet. I kick myself that neither of my current dogs would have coped with Bagpipe which remains my favourite dog name of all time. Also. He is sensational.

My father has/had a pair of Springer Spaniel gun dogs called Gumbo (dead), after a spicy Cajun soup and a Pointer he met hunting in the Louisiana bayou and Rudi (alive), who was supposed to be Ruby but there were no girls left.

My Vizsla bitch is called Birdie, after my favorite First Lady, Lady Bird Johnson. But I think that could work for a boy.

My former neighbours in Texas called their Boston Terrier Tuesday and their chihuahua Taco Bell (Taco), which are possibly my favorite dog names ever.

I think Rafferty (Raffy) would be great for your dog though. It is a boy's name of Irish origin meaning "floodtide, abundance, prosperity".

My only comment about dog names is this, as we all know you are still thinking about having a baby at some point and as far as I know haven't yet opted to choose its gender, don't choose a name for a dog that you might want to reserve for a child.

For all the lovely UK dog lovers on here, we are currently fostering a dog from Ukraine who needs a new home and I posted all the info about him here: https://substack.com/profile/28647665-agatha-a/note/c-59888782 He's paperwork refers to him as Tim, but nobody has ever called him that so he could be called Toast instead (doesn't he look like one?).
